FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
This page was created to answer questions I am often asked about my photography. If your question isn't answered here, please email me using the "contact" link.
CAN I DOWNLOAD AND USE YOUR PHOTOS FOR _______ ?
All images in my photography collection, even this website design, are protected under international copyright laws. Downloading, copying, duplicating, modifying, publishing, distributing, or anything other than enjoying the images online is strictly prohibited. The above rules (copying, duplicating, etc...) apply to prints as well. Violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. My photography is available for non-exclusive, fee-based use for most commercial or personal "for profit" applications. I usually don't charge fees for non-profit/educational use, although written permission will be required for any usage. Most images are available for high resolution applications, so feel free to contact me for more information.
WHAT TYPE OF CAMERA DO YOU USE?
I use a variety of equipment, including both film and digital cameras. My current equipment bag includes a Nikon N80 film camera and a Nikon D200 digital camera. I shoot most of my landscape images with the N80 and Fujichrome Velvia slide film, while most of the wildlife images are shot with the D200. I carry several lenses, including the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 AF-S VR, Tokina 28-70 f/2.8 AT-X Pro, and the Tokina 12-24 f/4 AT-X Pro (digital specific lens). I also carry Singh-Ray polarizers, Singh-Ray graduated neutral density filters, a Singh-Ray neutral density filter, a Singh-Ray Hi-Lux filter (basically a suped up UV filter), lots of slide film, several 2 GB compact flash memory cards, and a Slik Pro 813 Carbon Fiber tripod with a Slik ballhead.
ARE YOU A FULL TIME PHOTOGRAPHER?
Well, yes and no. My "regular" job is working full time for the State of Alaska, but my photography is much more than just a serious hobby. My state job currently pays the bills, but my love of photography is what really drives me in life. Living in Alaska provides so many opportunities to photograph things that many people have never seen or may never get to see. I consider myself very lucky! I plan to keep expanding not only my image library but my products as well. My focus so far has been on fine-art prints, and I will someday (soon) be offering things such as calendars, screen savers, and a stock photo library. Stay tuned...
DO YOU SELL YOUR WORK IN ANY GALLERIES?
No. I currently sell prints only through this website or at local art shows and craft fairs. There are several reasons I do this, mainly because it helps me keep my prices competitive. I do have some work displayed and for sale at Picture This! Photo Mats in downtown Juneau, and hope to add more shops in the near future. Basically, if the store is willing to sell at the same prices that I sell for on my website, then we're in business!
DO YOUR PRINTS LOOK AS GOOD AS THEY DO ONLINE?
Yes, even better! This is often asked in the form of "if I order a print from your website, will it look the same as it does on my computer screen?" The reason that I mentioned this on my print info page has to do with one of the biggest problems we photographers face: every computer monitor displays color and contrast differently, and they change over time (sometimes very quickly). All professional photographers (including me) have expensive devices that "calibrate" our monitors so that what we get on print is much closer to what is viewed on the monitor. Obviously, since every monitor is different, the best we can do is to get it right on our screen. What you see on your screen can unfortunately be beyond our control. Basically, if the color looks "off" or too saturated (or the picture looks flat) on your screen, it probably is.
Also, in wanting to make the photo "pop" onscreen, some photographers have a tendency to "over-do" the image, which is very easy to do if you're not careful. This results in the work being mis-represented and you, the customer, being disappointed when you don't get what you thought was going to be a spectacular print! This is why I love doing the local art shows and craft fairs, because there's nothing like showing a print that stops people in their tracks. I am very proud to say that I've never viewed an image on my computer monitor that didn't look better (hands down) on print. See for yourself!
